Seeing the “Holy” in everything
A sacrament is when something holy shows up in the middle of everyday life. It’s a moment when time opens up, and you get a glimpse of something deeper, something you can feel down in your bones.
Depending on your background, you might hear the word “sacrament” and think of specific rituals. Protestants tend to focus on two—communion and baptism. Roman Catholics add five more to the list: confirmation, penance, extreme unction, ordination, and marriage. These are those milestone moments—like when you hold a baby at their baptism or stand at the altar on your wedding day—where life suddenly feels weightier, more precious, more beautiful. These are times when the mystery of life feels close enough to touch, and you become aware of how fully “alive” you really are.
But here’s the thing: it’s not just in church where these holy moments happen. They can catch you off guard anywhere, with anyone, when you witness the birth of something new. When you make love. When someone shows up for you in the middle of your darkest hour or places their hand in yours, you instantly know everything is going to be ok. It’s that feeling you get around the dinner table with people who know and love you, when you laugh so hard you can’t breathe, or even when you lock eyes with a stranger and realize they aren’t so strange.
The truth is, if we weren’t so wrapped up in distractions, we’d notice that life itself is one significant sacrament. Holy moments are everywhere, and all moments are sacred. We just need to open our eyes to see them.
Dig Deep…Keep Going.
